Women Economic Empowerment in Agriculture Markets

Duration: February 2008 – October 2008

Action contre la Faim has launched Socio-Economic program in Agjebedi, Beylagan and Fizuli districts with financial assistance of SDC in Azerbaijan.

Uluchay was a Local Partner for ACF and implemented Women Economic Empowerment in Agriculture Markets component. Economic empowerment is fundamental to the achievement of gender equality, the empowerment of women and the eradication of poverty worldwide, thus this component considers capacity building of other Local Partners that can contribute to women economic empowerment, provides surveys in Agjebedi-Beylagan-Fizuli communities in order to clarify current situation and will provide trainings, educational opportunities and practical actions for targeted women in those communities.

The activities held withing the program:

? Two days training on Gender mainstraiming for the partner organizations (“Elat”, “Aran” and ACF)

The main purpose of the training was to increase the local partners’ knowledge about gender, to investigate, the ways of elimination of gender equality within the projects they realize.

? Survey “On economic empowerment and opportunities for women in rural areas & agricultural markets” in the areas (Agjabedi, Beylagen and Fuzuli) included

The aimof survey was:

  • Understand “Why markets don’t work for women?, “ Which actions should taken to make markets work for women?”, “What existing markets offer to women?”
  • Analyze the participation and role of women in livestock market value chain? Define active women roles in commercially-based economic activities in rural areas.

? On the basis of survey results to organize meetings for woman-farmers on diffirent subjects in the village; (build business relations with providers)

Different meetings and trainings were held to buy new brands of forage for woman-farmers and to use them, to borrow and manage bank loans, to increase the participation level of women in Water Unions.During this stage of the project Uluchay together with ELAT and Aran would take following actions within Socio-Economic Development program:

  • Fodder
  • Milk processing
  • Fattenning calf & buying/selling
  • Financial services
  • Artificial insemination
  • Irrigation services
